Singapore as a Global Leader in Sustainable Delivery Models

Singapore has been identified as one of the top producers of one-time plastic waste per capita globally. Despite our small size and high tourist influx, which might skew these statistics, this should be seen as a call to action, not an excuse for complacency. While we boast efficient waste-to-energy capabilities, relying solely on these facilities is akin to the well-known local sentiment that ‘Singapore is not a clean city; it’s a cleaned city.’ It highlights our reliance on reactive solutions rather than preventing environmental issues at their source.

Turning the Tide on Plastic Waste

Singapore’s issue with plastic waste, particularly one-time use plastics, presents a unique opportunity to demonstrate global leadership in sustainability. Take, for example, the 2023 mandatory plastic bag charge — this movement sparked widespread public discussion and policy shifts. Yet, the challenge remains substantial: a single laundry detergent bottle creates the plastic equivalent of 300 straws (or 30 plastic bags for that matter).

Refill packs are often marketed as a sustainable alternative, using 85% less plastic than traditional packaging. However, most consumers are unaware that these packs are generally non-recyclable, which could arguably make them more detrimental than the bottles they replace.

Innovating from the Ground Up

A few months ago, I launched a social enterprise passion project inspired by successful models worldwide — from a Chilean refill startup collaborating with global brands to a Shark Tank-featured tablet detergent firm and bulk dispensaries in Southeast Asia.

Our initial approach involves setting up automated dispensers in accessible locations such as HDB building void decks and community centres. These stations not only reduce plastic use but are also economically inclusive. Our philosophy is simple: Those unable to afford these products can access them for free, reinforcing our commitment to environmental stewardship as a collective responsibility.

Our objective is to catalyse a shift in consumer behaviour — from repetitive purchasing of new bottles to embracing refills. We will concurrently develop advanced delivery technologies, such as integrating essential oils into detergent tablets, which promise to further reduce packaging and transportation impacts. This ongoing innovation supports our mission to reshape how products are consumed and disposed of in Singapore

Why Singapore is the Ideal Launchpad

1. Ideal Testing Ground:

With over 75% of the population residing in high-density HDB flats, Singapore offers a unique vertical urban environment ideal for implementing efficient, scalable refill solutions unlike anywhere else in the world.

2. Access to Global Market Leaders:

Being home to major players like Unilever and Procter & Gamble provides direct lines to influential companies and potential partners, making it a strategic hub for pioneering sustainable packaging innovations.

3. Supportive Regulatory Framework:

Singapore’s forward-thinking policies under its Green Plan showcase a government committed to sustainability, with specific targets and incentives that support green business initiatives.

4. Cultural Readiness:

The rising environmental awareness among Singaporeans and their increasing demand for sustainable products create a fertile ground for the adoption of new technologies like refill stations.

Final Thoughts

In championing refill technologies and reducing single-use plastics, Singapore can lead by example on the global stage. Our unique position — with our dense urban environment, presence of major global corporations, supportive government policies, and a culturally receptive populace — positions us perfectly to pioneer these sustainable innovations.

I urge all stakeholders — government bodies, industry leaders, community groups, and individuals — to join us in this crucial endeavour. Together, we can transform Singapore not just into a cleaner place, but a truly sustainable model for the world.
